Some photos from my trip to NYC this past weekend. I took them in the Chelsea district.
I was in NYC because I was supposed to audition for Marymount Manhattan College’s BFA Acting program, but since I got into Tisch on Wednesday, I cancelled my audition!!! :) Since we already had our plane ticket and hotel reservations and it was too late to cancel, my momma and I decided to go and celebrate. We went to the Met, the Neue gallery, the Chelsea galleries, saw some friends from Tisch and got the inside scoop about classes and dorm rooms, and saw “Death of a Salesman” at the Barrymore.
It was the best production I have ever seen. I literally feel I don’t ever have to see another production because nothing could compare to the brilliance of this one. Philip Seymour Hoffman (a Tisch alumnai) was unrecognizable as Willy Loman; from his first entrance until his last, his portrayal of the broken Willy was unlike any other character I had seen him play before. Gone was the bravado, or the smary-ness of some of his other characters. And Andrew Garfield as Biff was just as amazing. I do not know of any theater work that he has done, so I was a little bit nervous for his sake because of the whole cliche that film-turned-stage actors are lousy, but he was fantastic. He had great stage presence, and I loved how his physicality changed from the present moments, to the flashbacks. He was truly amazing onstage, and I am excited to see more of his work in the theatre. I cannot forget to mention these actors’ father-son chemistry, it was heart-wrenching and beautiful. The rest of the cast was just as strong as these two actors, and the overall production left me with tears in my eyes and shell-shocked for a long time after it was finished. That has never happened to me before.
A great visit overall, and I am so so SOOOO excited to begin anew in Tisch next year.
Awesome.
